Did you know that washing machine hoses can burst? And did you know that they make washing machine hoses that have an automatic shutoff in case of such problems?

Well I was ignorant on both counts. Until, that is, I was awakened at 5:30 am (after going to bed around 4 am!) a few days ago by my neighbor ringing my doorbell, because water was flowing out of my garage and the side of my house. He turned off the water at the main control and I started wading through water (in sock.s, since my brain was not functioning) and checking out the whole scene

It took a while before I finally realized something was amiss in the laundry room. Not only was the floor wet, but the walls were too. And the washing machine was full of water! I put the washer on spin and waited for it to empty. I then turned off the faucets going to the washer and turned the water to the house back on. A quick turn of the cold water faucet very quickly told me that the water was coming from a burst cold water washing machine hose. (more…)

I just added a new article to this site about this topic. I originally created it as a writing sample, and have decided to include it on this site. I first got involved in detailed discussions of this topic through the Humane Fundraising yahoogroup, a wonderful group of people who are involved in some capacity with fundraising for animal welfare organizations.

Many group members work with smaller rescues, and we are all spread out throughout the US and even in some other countries. So we have different budgets, different areas of focus, and in many cases different populations we’re looking to for support and involvement.
Discussion often turns to types of events to hold, event themes, and event menus, which in turn leads to debate about whether it is appropriate to serve meat at events to support animal welfare organizations.
